Assigning a Dollar Value to Volunteer Time from Volunteer Match
The Independent Sector announced that the value of volunteer time, updated yearly, has increased from $17.19/hour in 2003, to $17.55/hour in 2004. The value of volunteer time is based on the average hourly earnings for private nonagricultural workers as determined by the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, and then increased by 12 percent to estimate fringe benefits. When the Independent Sector first calculated the value of volunteer time in 1980, it was $7.46/hour. The Independent Sector estimates the total value of hours volunteered in 2003 was equivalent to approximately $272 billion!
